Sleep Time
What type of cot or crib you buy for your baby is a big decision, not least because for the first few months of her life she’ll spend an average of 16-19 hours a day sleeping. Some people prefer to buy a moses basket or crib for those early months and then switch to a cot or cot bed at around six months. Others use a cot or cot bed from day one. Either option is fine.
Government advice and that of charities such as the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths recommend that, for the first six months, baby sleeps in a room with her parent/s. While most people can fit a moses basket in their bedroom, not everyone has room for a cot bed, so space might be an important factor in your decision. Portability may be another. If you want to be able to move your sleeping baby around the house with you during the day, then obviously a moses basket or carry cot is far more practical than a cot.
We have some great options available here. Mothercare has a wonderful range of moses baskets. The cot we’ve selected is a bedside cot, giving you the flexibility to use it as a conventional four-sided cot, or to fold one side away and fit it safely against your bed. The Cosatto range of cot beds is one of only a few on the market that includes a drop-side mechanism - a simple, yet really helpful feature. We’ve also really like the Graco Compact travel cot, the Quinny Dreami Carry Cot and a range of Grobag sleeping bags.
